Dundee
is the best city in the UK for seeing red squirrels. They were more common everywhere but they have gone from most of the country. In Dundee we should be proud to have them, before they are lost forever.
Where have the reds gone?
The American grey squirrel was introduced around 100 years ago. It has invaded spreading disease and stealing the red squirrels' food until most of the reds have gone. Red squirrels now only survive in remote forests and in places where grey squirrels are controlled. Without our help the grey will take over everywhere.
Where do they live?
Woods that contain a variety of conifer species, as well as broad leaved woods - especially those containing hazel.
What else do they eat?
Tree flowers, shoot of trees, bark, invertebrates (insects, including caterpillars),
fungi, nuts, berries, fruit and lichen.
Differences between red and grey squirrels
Not all red squirrels are red and not all grey squirrels are grey, but they are very different.
Reds:
- Smaller and Slimmer
- Reddish brown to blonde fur
- Ear tufts
- More often in trees
- More timid
Greys:
- Larger and broader
- Grey often with brown on back
- No ear tufts
- Often feed on the ground
- More bold
What is being done?
Duncarse and Dundee city council are working together to conserve the red squirrels at West Green Park.
Dundee Red Squirrel Project is collecting information on where squirrels are seen. If you see a red or grey, alive or dead in Dundee let them know.
What they need to know:
